- Making the council application for you
- The work, once consent is given
Your council
Who decides, town by town.
Each council runs its own register and its own application route. Each area page sets out the details for that town.
How a job runs.
Four steps, the same on every job.
Look
The tree, the access and anything nearby checked first.
Agree
The work and the price agreed before we start.
Cut
Felled, pruned or taken down in sections.
Clear
Brash chipped, garden left tidy.
What affects the price.
Every quote is set by the job itself, and these five things move it most.
Size and height
How big the tree is, and how high the work goes.
Access
How the kit gets in, and whether there is room to fell.
What is nearby
How close it stands to a building, a road or a line.
Waste
How much brash and timber there is to chip and take away.
TPO consent
Whether a protected tree needs an application first.
Questions.
How do I know if my tree is protected?
Each council keeps a register or map of protected trees. Our area pages link to each council’s own, and we can check it for you.
How long does the council take to decide?
For a Tree Preservation Order, eight weeks, after which you can appeal if there is no decision. In a conservation area, six weeks’ notice.
How long does consent last?
Two years from the date it is granted, unless the council sets a different time limit as a condition.
What about a dead tree?
Consent is not needed, but the council must have five working days’ written notice first, unless there is an immediate risk of serious harm.
What if work is done without consent?
A fine of up to £20,000 in the magistrates’ court, or an unlimited fine in the Crown Court in serious cases.
