Liverpool City Council

Protected trees in Liverpool.

We can check whether a tree is protected, and make the council application for you for a small fee. Protected trees

  • A tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs the council’s written consent before it is cut down, topped, lopped or uprooted.
  • Trees in a conservation area are protected too: the council needs six weeks’ notice before any work.
  • Liverpool has 36 conservation areas, including Knotty Ash, West Derby, Childwall Abbey, Wavertree Village and Woolton Village.
  • The council charges no fee for a tree works application. Dead or dangerous trees are exempt, but the council asks to be contacted first.

Street trees and high hedges.

A complaint about a neighbour’s high hedge comes under Part 8 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003. Each council runs its own route.

A council or street tree

  • Liverpool City Council looks after trees on its own land: parks, cemeteries, open spaces and streets. Its trees page shows how to report one.
