Two Cheshire councils

Protected trees in Cheshire.

We can check whether a tree is protected, and make the council application for you for a small fee. Protected trees

  • Cheshire has two councils, Cheshire West and Chester, and Cheshire East. Each keeps its own map of protected trees.
  • Cheshire West and Chester needs consent for any work to a tree with a TPO or in a conservation area, above or below ground.
  • It asks for a notice on site for 14 days, then has six weeks to consider conservation area trees and eight weeks for TPO trees.
  • Cheshire East needs six weeks’ notice for conservation area trees over 75mm across at 1.5 metres, and only takes applications through the Planning Portal.

Your council

Street trees and high hedges.

A complaint about a neighbour’s high hedge comes under Part 8 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003. Each council runs its own route.

A council or street tree

  • Cheshire West and Chester looks after trees in public spaces and on highways, and investigates one that is blocking access, dangerous or damaging property.

  • Cheshire East takes reports of dead, diseased or obstructing roadside trees through traCE. Most trees and hedges beside its roads are privately owned.
