Halton Borough Council

Protected trees in Halton.

We can check whether a tree is protected, and make the council application for you for a small fee. Protected trees

  • Work on a tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs notice to Halton Borough Council and an application form.
  • For trees in a conservation area, the council must have at least six weeks’ notice. Halton has 10 conservation areas, shown on its map.
  • Even pruning branches or roots that overhang your garden needs consent first if the tree is protected.
  • The council does not prune its own trees just to stop overhanging branches or let in light, solar panels included.

Your council

Street trees and high hedges.

A complaint about a neighbour’s high hedge comes under Part 8 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003. Each council runs its own route.

A council or street tree

  • Halton will not prune or remove its own trees for overhanging branches or light. It takes requests where a tree shows disease or a specific danger.

A neighbour’s high hedge

  • Halton’s fees list charges £385 for a high hedge complaint, or £75 for an assessment first, taken off the complaint fee. For how to complain, see the council’s page.
